About Smoked Out: Watching Them Scrape Our Homes Away

Composed by: Carl Erez

Abstract: For this dramaturgical project, I wanted to look at how different elements of theater can make a cohesive piece. Figuring out how Forum Theatre, traditional theatre, and a game can flow with historical background and context can make a more well rounded performance. Each element of this play was integral to each other and flowed into one another. The main part of job was to make sure that the actors had the context for each section in depth. Which meant that I looked deeply into the rebuilding process, the history of forum theater, the history of fire’s in California, and looking at how games have changed theater and this production. Through the research of each of these elements, I was able to use historical analysis to understand how different types of theatre can create a different and powerful message.
